How to Organize Health & Wellbeing-related Meetups?

We would like to share our know-how in running meetups that aim to bring up novel solutions for needs in Health & Wellbeing with you. Our know-how is work in progress and stems from our work in a EU-funded project called Careables (careables.org). Our goal is to develop a digital and social platform which brings together all open source solutions for solving challenges in Health & Wellbeing. Such solutions should be replicable in any well equipped makerspace in the world and should be complementary to established solutions. We would like to share our experiences in running related workshops and design sprints with you to further improve our approach. We'll work with an actual use case to display what our undertaking is all about.

Printing Interactivity: Rapid prototyping with Printed Electronics

We present an introduction and hands-on session on printed electronics for rapid prototyping wearable and tangible interfaces.

Printing electronics is currently changing the way how mobile, deformable and integrated user interfaces are fabricated. Interactive devices created by this technology are thin, flexible and provide a variety of input and output channels like touch- and proximity sensing, deformation sensing, flexible and stretchable displays. This enables novel kinds of mobile devices, tangible interfaces, and wearables. This 4h workshop provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in printed electronics. This is followed by a hands-on session using a rapid prototyping ink-jet technology to fabricate sensors and displays with conductive inks. After a brief brainstorming session, the participants design, for instance, are wearable or mobile interactive artifact. The workshop concludes with an open discussion about perspectives on printed electronics for prototyping and fabrication.

Collaboration between fablabs for project

We would like to discuss the possibility to collaborate on a project in mind at the cross road between haute couture and digital fabrication. The project idea was born in collaboration with two Italian designers from the region Lazio (https://en-gb.facebook.com/donatodimunnolucabaldini/) and it is about Story Bags: design your own bag with symbols of your own story or drawings, using scrap materials that otherwise are thrown away. With the best works we create a travelling exposition among labs to inspire other children to start making. The objective of this seminar is to open a dialogue among different labs in different countries. A lot of different people meet in events and projects but those meetings are bounded in time. As a small lab in Belgium specialized in working with children under 13, we would like to invest in more long lasting inter-country innovation dynamics. Are there labs interested? Can we collaborate to raise funds so that international projects like this can be set up and developed? We are new to application for European funds and we look for partners with experience. DIY sustainability in off-grid fablabs

A Fabship is a fully autonomous workshop (Fablab) prototype, powered by renewable energy and hosted in a bioclimatic self-sufficient building called Earthship. Fabships are essentially about people, power and community. It is about challenging the concept of How to make (almost) Anything within an autonomous makerspace, setting a tangible framework for energy efficient manufacturing, and empowering communities to produce locally as well as sustainably. During this workshop we will present the white paper and milestones of fabships, we will discuss the concept of autonomy for a more responsible manufacturing and co-create strategies for implementing distributed off-grid production and innovation.

While we are all working on creating more access to education, tools and machines, knowledge and co-creation, smaller labs and local efforts are not always able to get European funds, or participate in larger projects. This session will be a start in discussing how we could better collaborate between European labs and the European Union, while making sure we also include the voices of smaller labs and spaces (and not just fab labs, but all ‘maker’ efforts in the EU). The EU is preparing the next iteration of H2020 funding, and we would like to make sure the smaller labs and spaces will be able to participate in this as well, while also creating a voice to show the EU why and how all efforts in the ‘maker’ field should be supported. While we are all doing great things to democratise access to digital fabrication, empowering young and old in lifelong learning, improving the social fabric and giving rise to a new wave of entrepreneurs - at the same time we risk to create a big divide between the “flagship” makerspaces and the other 95%. Let's prove bacteria existence: Why should I wash my hands before eating?

Intended to introduce people to the scientific habit of questioning and proving common knowledge, in this case, existence of microbes (bacteria and fungi) and the need of washing our hands before eating. Besides, it integrates science to the everydayness, through the learning of a low-cost technique to take samples of our surroundings and grow bacteria from them. The workshop is comprised of four modules: Petri dishes preparation, sampling, macro-observation and micro-observation. Participants learn the requirements of microbes and are able to understand each phase of the medium preparation, including the key importance of sterility and biosafety. They are then encouraged to find places probably full of microbes on their surroundings, and instructed on how to grow bacteria and fungi from them, while making microbial drawings. Through safe sensorial experiences such as close observation of colonies and smell, they distinguish harmful from beneficial bacteria and learn about their importance on our world.

Teach your students high-tech ways to break things and learn while doing so.

Drawing on our education-focused experiences to deliver both an entertaining and informative digital fabrication session, Fab Lab Carnegie Science Center and Fab Lab Jackson County team up to bring you Battle Royale Bots. Participants use 2D and 3D design software to create laser cut, Sphero-driven Battle Royale Bots. This engineering design challenge encourages groups to figure out how to protect their robot, while dealing damage to their opponents. See what team can be the last one standing! During this lesson, learn how to deliver this program to students of a wide range of ages and skill sets. Additionally, we will discuss multiple ways to adapt this lesson to meet varying software, hardware, and other needs.

Fabricating Change: The Benefits of Fab Labs on the Mental Wellness of Our Students

The presentation will focus on the work Intermediate Unit One is doing with children in need of emotional support and its Fabrication Lab funded by Chevron. Intermediate Unit One has partnered with Chartlytics and Penn State University in this initiative and have been collecting data on emotional support students in the Fab Lab to show how hands-on and technologically sound programming has therapeutic and behavioral benefits for those students struggling with mental illness. This workshop will review the results of this study as well as share the videos/testimonials that track the changes for IU1 emotional support students. Curriculum/projects will also be shared.

Our team has also participated in the development of several Apps that allow children to learn computing and programming by playing with Social Robots. We are now exploring possibilities with Sota, a japanesse small robot. During the workshop participants discover Cloqq.com and Sota. Once everyone has discovered CLOOQ.com and Sota we will start working in groups. Each group will define a use case where Sota or Cloqq.com, can be interesting for them. Part of our mission is to better our community by engaging and supporting other organizations. In this capacity, we’ve developed a program that helps spread the principals of design thinking and digital fabrication while also earning revenue for our lab. Many of our local nonprofit and business partners host events that utilize tabletop centerpieces. These can be both expensive and wasteful. As an alternative, we facilitate a design thinking workshop that encourages organizations to focus on the people they’re serving, thus, leading to a more human-centered design that better reflects the core values of the event. We charge a fee for both the facilitation and production of the final design. Lastly, Attendees of the event are encouraged to take the centerpieces home afterwards. FAB City takes the ideals of the Fab Lab - the connectivity, culture and creativity - and scales it to the City. It is a new urban model of transforming and shaping cities that shifts how they source and use materials from ‘Products In Trash Out’ (PITO) to ‘Data In Data Out’ (DIDO). This means that more production occurs inside the city, along with recycling materials and meeting local needs through local inventiveness. Turn old office memos, graded homework assignments, and postal waste into unique and useful handmade paper products… or, how I learned to stop worrying and love the couch!

Despite ever-increasing digitization, we are awash with excess paper. There is something powerful about physical presence, whether of a piece of paper, the ppm of pollutants in local waterways, or an old tree unmolested by logging interests. In this circular economy workshop, participants will learn to easily reprocess outdated office/school papers, unsolicited advertisements, and used packing materials to create hand-formed sheets of paper using traditional mould and deckle. After drying, we will explore methods of using CNC tools to alter the form and surface of the handmade paper for fun and functional projects.

A major constraint on the sustainability of FabLabs is the availability of adequate human capital. We consider the model of ASAP Media Services, a student-operated New Media research and production FabLab at the University of Maine. Working with real-world clients, ASAP’s work process is primarily the responsibility of the student staff. Collaborative structures provide a facilitating space for projects to organize and self-direct. The model has been sustained since 1987.

Mechanical metamaterials are materials that have unusual mechanical properties thanks to their structure rather than their microscopic composition. Digital fabrication has recently given the tools to physicists, mathematicians, engineers and designers to explore these kinds of new materials. These smart materials open the path to materials in which we can pre-program the way they deform or they behave. In this workshop, I would like to show some fundamental and recent discoveries in the field of mechanical metamaterials. Although the example I chose to present have been flavored by the scientific community, they are often inspired from artistic or nature's work. I will give to this workshop a very hands-on and visual flavor to convey the key messages. These will be illustrated by building origami and kirigami foldings and by manipulating experimental and physical models. In the future, these might inspire new practice in mechanical design.

**To be taking in conjunction with / following Jakob Nilsson's Machine Making Workshop** We will use networked stepper motor controllers and brushless motor drivers, along with the realtime browser computing platform at mods.cba.mit.edu to develop motion-and-acceleration planning algorithms for two or three axis milling, marking, cutting, and engraving machines. We will then challenge ourselves to incorporate real-time machine feedback into these planning algorithms, or incorporate advanced kinematics, rotary axis, etc!

Facilitating Deep Learning through Open-Ended DigiFab projects

We will propose open-ended project themes that are sufficiently deep and layered such that people can learn not only digital fabrication but also the underlying mathematics and science. We hope people will take the time to make their own project within the theme, or invent new themes and projects. In this working group, we will detail several strategies to track public opening times and conditions at Fablabs.io, so we can make sure, we're democratizing access, not building walled gardens.

Turn old office memos, graded homework assignments, and postal waste into unique and useful handmade paper products… or, how I learned to stop worrying and love the couch!

Despite ever-increasing digitization, we are awash with excess paper. There is something powerful about physical presence, whether of a piece of paper, the ppm of pollutants in local waterways, or an old tree unmolested by logging interests. In this circular economy workshop, participants will learn to easily reprocess outdated office/school papers, unsolicited advertisements, and used packing materials to create hand-formed sheets of paper using traditional mould and deckle. After drying, we will explore methods of using CNC tools to alter the form and surface of the handmade paper for fun and functional projects.

MakerNet is an ecosystem that enables distributed manufacturing. Designers upload their open-hardware CAD files, registered in MakerNet's blockchain to secure its intellectual property rules. When a consumer buys the manufacture of a design, it will be made in surrounding fabricating nodes and sent to the buyer. A fraction of the manufacturing price is forwarded to the original designer.

3Dfoodprinting, what is already daily practice and what will be the future?

ARGOS

FabLab Maastricht is doing research into 3D printing of food since 2013. At the makerfaire Rome that year we were happy to print Nutella on a cookie. The foldable multimaterial 3D printer which was developed in our Fablab is now a company at the famous Hightech campus in Eindhoven: byFlow. 15 employees build and sell 3D printers in batches of 100 printers. They collaborate with the biggest foodindustry, universities, Michelin chefs, top chocolatiers, patissiers, catering companies, food designers etc. Together they optimised the work􀂢ow: own 3D design software Studio, 3D foodie the Thingiverse for food (3D designs and recipes for food), pre􀂡lled cartridges, easy to use 3D food printer etc. FabLab Maastricht is still doing the long term research, focussing on 3D food as medicine. Meals for people who can not swallow, personal nutrition for special target groups like sporters (combined with DNA analyses and smartwatches), use of meat replacers like algae, insects, seaweed etc, 3D printed food in airplanes etc

Come help us make new tools for our survival kit for people living in hurricane zones!

We are a falab in the Island of Saint-Martin. We are working with the unhabitants with our mobile fablab in order to help reconstruct after the IRMA Hurricane of last September. We are also preparing the next cyclonic season by making a survival kit in case of hurricanes (solar power, essential tools, low tech...). We would like to brainstorm and to create more tools with you for the Saint-Martinois and maybe other people who often suffer from hurricane.
