Version 2
Workshop: Open Space Makers - Fab Lab & Space Exploration

Work Group animated by Justyna Swat (VP-Open Space Makers), Lea Floury (RFF), Nicolas Fifre (RFF)
Work group dedicated to the topic of open source hardware for space exploration developed in FabLabs.
We will discuss the means, materials, components, legislation, infrastructure and knowledge necessary to develop space hardware in FabLabs. We will exchange experience and collect information about existing projects: cube sats, telescopes, experimental rockets, science experiments for the ISS et etc..
We will also introduce you to the project of Open Source Space Toolkit.
Context:
In recent years, we could observe the development of the commercial sector of space industry, the beginning of so-called “New Space”. The technology is now smaller and more accessible and the costs of space launching are lowering as the new players join the “Space Race”. We could all observe that with the recent launch of the Falcon 9 by Space X.
Today we can already start prototyping the Moon and Mars villages and design the experience for Space Tourism.
In Europe, we compare this era to the Industry 4.0 and we call it Space 4.0. In August 2017 the National Space Agency CNES instigated a non-profit association call Open Space Makers (www.federation-openspacemakers.com), its mission is to foster open source making ecosystem of citizen innovation and support the community.
Can and will Fablabs play a role in this movement? Can the future satellites be produced in a distributed way in Fablabs or even manufactured directly on site in space?
