Workshop: Thematic Projects inside an Aviation and Maritime High School Fab Lab
Maritime and Aviation Science course electives have “come alive” in the Fab Lab at Davis Aviation and Maritime High School in Cleveland, OH. Students are making connections to the “real world” by having the opportunity to design and prototype authentic projects in the Fab Lab. During the first two years of this newly created high school, 9th grade students have taken a Maritime Science course where they have designed and fabricated topographical maps of the Great Lakes region, built and calibrated a model ship towing tank, completed a Cargo Ship end-of-the-year Capstone experience, and designed their own “Engineering Design Process” which provides the foundation for all the design work. 10th Grade students have taken an Aviation Science course where they built and tested model rockets in a high-pressure, timed challenge to reach maximum altitude. Rockets were launched from a pressurized air platform launcher which was built in the Fab Lab.
